Young Person's Participation Day - Let's get ready to bowl

Young Person's Partipation Day goes down a treat!

Last year the Foster Care Team joined forces with the Residential staff to provide an afternoon of fun for the young people in Carolina House Trust's care. And before it they asked the kids for their views on being in care and suggestions for improvement. Spurred on by the success of the day, they got their heads together with carers again this year and, on October 16th, provided the young people, and the kids of carers, with a fun packed day linking serious reflection on the point of being in care with hours of hilarity at the Dundee Megabowl and Zap Zone. And, mindful that Halloween was fast approaching, everyone was encouraged to dress up for the occasion – staff, carers and kids alike.

While Lesley and Elena were encouraging the young people to give their views in an interactive game on being in care, carers met with CHT staff in another part of the building. This enabled them all to put names to voices, and should encourage carers to understand the various roles. Debbie, who deals with finance and Claire, who has taken over the Foster Care admin were introduced to the group of carers, most of whom were scarcely recognisable in their fancy dress(!) then Joyce talked about the impending move to Dovetail, and the expansion of the Trust’s services whilst Neil explained the dual functions of being a charity and a business. And everyone received a pristine copy of the Foster Care Handbook, hot off the press that very week!

But the afternoon was the real point of the day! Kids, staff and carers had a frenetic time at the Superbowl, dividing their time between zapping the life out of one another and bowling their way to victory in four mixed teams. Just because they’re older, doesn’t mean they’re better, as the adults conceded defeat to the energetic kids!

Rachel B won the prize of an HMV voucher for the top score in the Zap Zone and the prizes for fancy dress went to James H. in the under-12 group and Natasha T in the over -12s. ‘Brill! Cool! Wicked!’ echoed round the room. ‘When are we doing it again?’ Errrr?

A huge thank you to all who took part! If you’ve got any ideas for next year, let the Team know soon. It’ll take some planning,
